"The most dangerous person to any government is the one who is able to think things out... without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane, intolerable." --H.L. Mencken

The Land of the Silent and the Home of the Fearful by Dave Lindorff - 32,699 reads
The only demonstrably true statement George Bush has made in his sorry eight years in office is that the Constitution is "just a goddamned piece of paper." While it wasn't the point he was making, when he reportedly shouted this at a couple of Republican members of Congress who were questioning the constitutionality of some of his actions, he was right that the nation's founding document is only worth the parchment and ink it's composed of, unless people use it and defend it.
There is a remarkable and palpable fear abroad in this land - not a fear of terrorism, but a fear of speaking up, a fear of being labeled as "different" or as a "troublemaker."

I Want My Country Back A Classic from Harry Browne - 23,684 reads
I love America, and I can't stand quietly by while the land of peace and liberty is being destroyed.
I love the America of the Constitution and limited government - not the America of the Patriot Act and the Orwellian Department of Homeland Security.
I love the America that Washington and Jefferson said should be far removed from all the age-old quarrels of Europe and Asia, while trading benevolently with people all over the world - not the America that has troops in a hundred countries while our own government prohibits us from peaceful trading with dozens of countries.
In short, I want my country back .

The Basic Flaw in Neoconservatism by Charley Reese - 20,386 reads
The basic flaw in the neoconservative ideology is that democracy can be imposed on other people at the point of a gun.
Furthermore, if neoconservatives came from an American tradition rather than a Trotskyite tradition, they would understand that America itself is not a democracy. Benjamin Franklin emerged from the Constitutional Convention and a lady asked him, "Well, Mr. Franklin, what kind of government have you given us?" He did not say democracy. He replied, "Madam, we have given you a republic - if you can keep it."

Are You Ready For Nuclear War? by Paul Craig Roberts - 13,674 reads
I get emails from these Brownshirts and attest that their hate-filled ignorance is extraordinary. They are all Republicans, and yet they think they are conservatives. They have no idea who I am, but since I criticize the Bush Regime and America's belligerent foreign policy, they think I am a "liberal commie pinko."
The only literate sentence this legion of imbeciles has ever managed is: "If you hate America so much, why don't you move to Cuba!"
Such is the current state of a Reagan political appointee in today's Republican Party. He is a "liberal commie pinko" who should move to Cuba.
The Republicans will get us into more wars. Indeed, they live for war. McCain is preaching war for 100 years. For these warmongers, it is like cheering for your home team. Win at all costs. They get a vicarious pleasure out of war. If the US has to tell lies in order to attack countries, what's wrong with that? "If we don't kill them over there, they will kill us over here."
The mindlessness is total.

Living in a Lying Nation by Sean M. Madden - 6,538 reads
The Western media always reserves the right to choose its starting point in history. Those who retain a semblance of individual thought after seven years of being brainwashed by our brave truth-telling journalists may recall that all of history collapsed on the morning of September 11, 2001. The public was, therefore, denied a frank national discussion concerning U.S. foreign policy actions which may have led to the attacks.
We were similarly denied a frank national discussion concerning the attacks themselves, who may have perpetrated them, what their motives may have been, who may have benefitted from the attacks, and what evidence existed which might point - beyond a shadow of a doubt - to the true culprits. Instead, what could have been a maturation moment for our adolescent republic, led, on the contrary, to a blatant attempt to keep "we the people" infantile in our response .

Editor's Pick: Military Imperialism as a Means to National Suicide by Evans Munyemesha - 1,885 reads

Military imperialism impresses upon the public mind the odd but dangerous suggestion that dissent and resistance are tools of the enemies of legitimate political authority ---and almost never the tools of the friends of liberty. It is here then that we find that opposition to political authority is bound to be regarded by public opinion as criminal and treasonous.
Military imperialism depraves national morality while nurturing national perversity. These evil twins, depraved morality and national perversity, manifest themselves in shameless politics, unethical business practices, a vengeful and highly expensive legal system, deceptive advertising and marketing, rampant fraud in trade, and widespread predation, vanity, and rot in social intercourse.
By this policy of military imperialism, the public is slowly habituated to the fanciful but powerful belief that voluntary subordination to political authority that seems to grow ever more despotic under the pretext of national security and obedience to arbitrary laws is a means to a higher good. This habituation, cold, systematic, and relentless, consequently ensures that the seeds needful for the growth of liberty shrivel and die.
