 Watch 'Em Drown, Again

October 5, 2006
by Daithí Mac Lochlainn

Have you ever heard the story of the drowning man who called to God to save him?

Alone and treading water in the middle of the sea, he was soon visited by a navy vessel. The crew offered help, but the man refused.

"God will save me!", he asserted, "I wait upon Him!"

Then, a cargo ship arrived, but the man refused again.

When a helicopter hovered above and lowered a rope, the man refused.

Later, the man drowned to death and was face to face with God Himself.

"Why didn't you save me, Lord?", asked the man.

"What? I sent two boats and a helicopter", replied God, "What more was I to do?"

The Democratic Party is the drowning man in the sea of American politics.

The Bushling has been described as a "godsend" to the Neo-Conservatives and the Otisolaters. Nothing could be further from the truth.

(Article Continues Below)

If anything, the Bushling's nomination to head the GOP ticket in 2000, was God's special gift to the Democratic Party.

In 1999, while traveling across Texas, I spied a huge sign posted alongside a rode, "America Needs George Bush". Some people are alive to this day, because I was only the passenger, and not the driver, of the car. Ridiculous, I thought.

Puerile, ill-spoken, ignorant and incurious, the Bushling would have been any party's dream opponent years ago.

Al Gore, and anyone, should have won by a landslide, making the Florida debacle insignificant.

The second boat came with the 2004 election. This time, the Bushling was accompanied by his abysmal record.

Now the helicopter is hovering over the Democratic Party.

No, Mark Foley is no gift to anyone.

However, the Democrats, and indeed all of America, have been blessed by the courageous young men who are turning over copies of Foley's vile communiqués and a major media outlet which stepped out of line by daring to broadcast the story.

My prediction: Is spite of the Democrats' understandable schadenfreude over the Foley scandal, they will somehow manage to lose elections nationwide, allowing the Neo-Crazies to return to Capitol Hill, and perhaps, even pick up a few new seats.

They've never failed to disappoint me before. Why should this November be any different?

Prove me wrong, please!
