U.N. resolutions and sanctions, one in the same - ineffective

September 3, 2006
by Robert T. Melaccio Sr.

Well we have all seen the uselessness of U.N. resolutions and sanctions. Here we are weeks after the cease fire in Israel and none of what everyone thought was to take place has. Hezbollah is not disarming, Syria has become brazen, Iran shoves its nose in the air and the rest of the world talks big but can't get on board the same train to do anything. Do we average people really think Russia and China are going to abide by sanctions? We now hear just today from the U.N. there will be "minimum sanctions if any at all. That Russia stands to lose billions because they are assisting with the reactor.

Also, do we really think other nations like Venezuela will abide? Do we really think we and the world will do anything even if they admit such or are found out? The citizens of the world know the answer and so does the leadership of the world. Here they were in May talking tough and here we are at the end of August talking giving Iran time. In my opinion and the opinion of many that is exactly why we are in the mess we are in. It is called resolve and few have it. They talk about not needing unanimity but how do you impose sanctions that work? You and I know you don't.

I have stated in earlier articles that the needs of individual nations evidently take preeminence over worldly objectives and goals in this forum. The remarks on the news today evidently prove that concept. Posturing and positioning for self interests is the name of the game. They call it diplomacy, frankly, to us simple people, we say don't blank, blank me. You are, or you are not, you can or you won't! You shake my hand the deal is done, if you don't follow through "burn me once shame on you, burn me twice shame on me". Also, since, when has the U.N. demonstrated it is a vibrant organization? Certainly, as we all know they do a halfway decent job of humanitarian aide. However, we should not forget most of the money, supplies and capability comes from good old Uncle Sam and there always seems to be some under the cover activities popping up.

So just what can be done? Well, as a famous wrestling star says, "what you goanna do, what you goanna do" ? The answers are not easy however, in my opinion if we continue to push a failing ideology and to push free enterprise on people who want the benefits but not us, we will continue to breed hatred and we will continue to be in conflict. Certainly with all we have handed to the world one has to sit back and wonder why all the hatred? Name another nation which has given so much away for free and opened their borders to millions and millions. So just why do they hate us. I'm sure our leaders are perplexed. Well my own opinion is it has nothing to do with average Americans. These people do not see average Americans as the threat but they do see American Corporations as that.

Why do they think that way? In my opinion we are perceived as attacking their values and way of life and what they perceive as exploitation and colonialism. It is as simple a this and yet it evidently is ignored because those in power do not mix with the common folk nor do they really care. They believe the changes will eventually bring the masses to their position. Well lets take a look at those in Iran. These are simple people who found by nature of events they are in control. They are not rich, powerful, except that they have now gained such, nor do they hang at the same social clubs as the rest of the world. Frankly, in my opinion the world leaders are perplexed because of this as well.

Now in my opinion I don't think our perceived and known enemies want war nor do they want economic sanctions even though we believe they may want to die for their faith. I do believe they do want what we have, because simply put they all flock to us for their education, free handouts, military upgrades, internet capability and so on. They also want to recapture the past and their long lost glory. So perhaps, just perhaps, there is room to explore just what it is they perceive and want and we just may be actually surprised?

Now everyone recognizes our conventional military capability and now we are perhaps becoming one of the best at urban warfare. We have certainly bled a lot in Iraq for this experience. Yet, we continue to hear of these urban wars as the wars of the future. Well what does that speak to? It says to many of us that while conventionally sound we are still inadequate for the type of warfare and opponent we face today and we expect more of the same. The situation in Israel and Iraq proved that point. What will be needed in future wars to take and hold ground and subdue violence in populations? You and I both know- we need boots on the ground!

As I mentioned in one of my earlier articles, did not the British learn that in our own revolution, did not the French defeat Russia conventionally but have to retreat because of the actions of people who made life difficult and who would not surrender? The lesson are clear but mankind can't seem to remember them and we fall into the same trap over and over. Certainly, we brought freedom to Iraq. However, in the words of the Iranian President, "thank you but good bye leave us alone"! Now if the Iraq people wanted us there and wanted peace why are they killing each other and us? Why do they not rid the land of those who kill? Certainly they know who these people are and where they are. Frankly, they have lived this way for thousands of years and it will continue for even more years. To think peace will reign is not what this area is about in this generation and yet hopefully it will evolve over time.

(Article Continues Below)

Now many average Americans suspects, as does others in the world, that the real reason for the adventure is Black Gold or Texas Tea as the Beverly Hillbillies used to say- oil. So now, after prices have skyrocketed and we see the folly of oil we now shift gears toward other types of fuel. Why do we think so? Is it to help the average American or is it the possibility the oil will not flow so freely in the near future. We have no more alternative but an alternative! In my opinion the reasons for the current situation is free enterprise, strategic positioning and spreading the Global dream not democracy. In the worldly climate of today pushing too hard and too fast has created perceptions we do not need.

So just where does that leave us? We all know we can erase these perceived enemies from the earth as a people and nation. But we also know we will pay a price because we are saturated with people from this area who have the same ideology, religion and beliefs and who a fraction of just may want to do harm? We can perform a surgical strike and take out most if not all of their military and nuclear capability. However, we are back at the same situation. The walking bombs who don't mind blowing themselves and any other innocent to bits in practice of their faith.

Now to many it only sounds feasible that we should talk. Iran wants to be a super power and join the others with Atomic weapons. In my opinion it is a twofold reason. It is matter of fear and pride. I believe more pride because of its long history of civilization. However, can we trust them? Well Reagan once said [about a thousand times ] "trust but verify". In my opinion I would be sleeping with one eye open until that trust turns into actions. As example, we have been living the uneasy peace with Russia for sometime now. Is anyone naive enough to think their goals haven't changed? Just look who is helping Iran to get into this position. Is it because Bush likes Putin and all will be well? Well we can still keep an eye open while pointing quite a bit at them. Certainly, if we can establish a relationship with Iran it just might balance that which China is fomenting even as we read about these events. As mentioned, is there any reason why China would go for sanctions?

There really is no easy solution because we have created a box which needs to be cut and opened up. My opinion is that we must realize Globalization only works for those who want it. Not even the South Americans want it because it impose in my opinion American corporate might and they have discovered they can have their own version. Yes, simply put, many prosper, but who? Average people all over the globe are asking that question. Yes, China has unleashed their own virus and they are finding out that genie is hard to contain. However, we forget, to the peasant in the army they still respond to the government and they can eliminate millions and would not flinch or blink an eye wile the world complains.

Now you can disagree all you want and you can say the heck with them and give them an ultimatum. But you know, in my opinion if that happens the average persons of the world will be the ones to suffer deeply. If we are as powerful as we preach we need not worry about our prowess. We lose nothing but some misdirected pride by talking. We certainly might come to an understanding? However, if we can't we know exactly that we will never be able to resolve the issues and we should then take what action is necessary to protect our nation and allies. That will put all arguments to rest! As for true allies, you can count them on your toes. Draw a line and see who steps over?

Now some say it is appeasement to talk to Iran or even Korea. But say what you want. As example, when the Pope came out of Rome to Attila he turned this great Army around through reasoning and Attila left Rome standing. You say it is not the same, well perhaps you are right but let me propose this, what do you intend to do? Do we demand or else? I think we have already addressed that issue. Do we occupy them, well how and for how long. Does not Iraq illustrate that failed concept. Do we subjugate them. Well how long do you think that will last and what will that cost ? Do you have a number in mind"

Certainly, because of what we have done over the last twenty or so years we cannot become total isolationists. However, we should no longer count on organizations like the U.N. who are flouted as being the only source to resolve worldly differences, yet continues to be biased and demonstrate favoritism while resolving little.

My opinion is that we should work with our true allies and be prepared to defend ourselves and them with whatever means at our disposal, always remembering it is our total destruction that those who despise us want. Do we bring war to our enemies if we are threatened? Well that is a major question of what we want our people to sacrifice and will we win in the true sense of winning, or will we grow hostilities which will fester long after battles are fought and won. Just look to history again and the Germanic tribes and Rome. It took awhile but it came full circle.

Well without being repetitive, in my opinion and that of many, we have enough rebuilding right here at home and enough capability to put everyone into good jobs. Just look at the mess from Katrina and potentials all over which are similar. We have enough capability to secure our borders, remove illegal workers and protect our citizens. That is if we elect those who have our interests first and not some notion of trickle down or a Global dream. I don't know about you, but in my opinion the bones are getting scarcer.

We must, even though our pride says we are, position our nation as the strongest in response capabilities to any contingency and maintain it. We must maintain "in house capability" and not be dependent on foreign sources which we are exposed to today. Certainly our military should be bigger and stronger in many area's keeping in mind the necessary controls that abuse of power always bring. Look at the development of manufacturing and technology within our borders, limit immigrations and abuse and grow jobs at home. Create a civil service program that includes every citizen. Continue to spread the Global dream but with equitable approaches and the elimination and controls to minimize greed and exploitation working with the nations who are truly, by action and example our allies and who want to join with us! However, never forget who rules these nations and never forget the average people.

As for the rest we must realize if they are not with us they are against us but that we can respect the direction they are going as long as our interests and well being is not impacted or we are placed in danger. It is a big world and it can hold a lot of diversity and we can allow countries to grow in peace in different directions.

We should always remember that as Americans it is the Big Guy, The Champ, the one on the top everyone wants to knock off. Yes, it is lonely at the top! You should always be prepared and not take anyone lightly!
