Traitors in Our Midst

After reading Jason Leopold's recent article, I got a Michael Chertoff gut feeling that something was missing. It's not that Mr. Leopold didn't include the names and ranks of Gen. Catton, Gen. Caslen, and Gen. Brooks; or that he failed to list pertinent facts such as the Inspector General's report, or that a video was filmed inside the Pentagon by The Christian Embassy's employees. What I found missing was how this nefarious deed was allowed to happen and why the Pentagon harbors traitors in its midst.

Mikey Weinstein, a firm supporter for the separation of church and state, has stated "This administration has turned the entire D.O.D. into its own personal faith-based initiative." I agree with Mr. Weinstein that the Cheney/Bush/Rove cabal use God to further their egocentric agenda, but in addition, the religious bastardization of our military would not have happened without the direct collaboration of military men such as the aforementioned generals.

The Inspector General's report said the Christian Embassy has become a ?quasi-Federal entity'. In other words the D.O.D. has given the C.E. its seal of heavenly approval'. Without an argument, leaders of our military now have group prayer served for their breakfast, lunch and dinner. Pep rallies rouse up the spirit in a man going off to war, but everybody knows that the holy-spirit in America manifests itself under many different religious umbrellas, not just Christianity. This Christianization of our military happened because no one, except Ron Paul, has had the courage to point out the insidious takeover.

Every member of the military, from private to general, takes a sacred oath to defend and support our Constitution. A soldier's priority is always Country first. If a man or woman wearing the military uniform of the U.S.A. cannot abide by their military pledge, they have a moral obligation to remove themselves from active duty, or become traitors in the midst. Even General Robert E. Lee knew it was his duty to remove the officer boards from his shoulders and honorably submit his resignation to the U. S. Government, so he could take up his own personal Lost Cause.

These days a worry lurks everywhere. Which one of the evangelical generals is in charge of the button? Every day there's more news about another fat cat popping out of their gilded suspenders. Then they're pardoned for stuffing a bunch of sow's ear purses with the widow's fund. We see the middleclass just barely surviving, plodding along with 2 kids and 3 jobs. Even with their noses stuck up the neighbors' exhaust, they can do little except shrug as their plastic melts at the gas pump. The poorest among us are left under a bridge, a painless death by carbon monoxide their only hope.

'Back in the day' the 'old school' boys knew, what's right is right and what's wrong is wrong. One of the right things they included in the Constitution was the importance of keeping the church and state separate. That's been an accepted fact since the founders set up housekeeping in America; to keep government rule away from those who think they can interpret God's will by political or military means.

Madalyn Murry O'Hair was one of the first citizens to recognize that the road to ruin for this country would be paved by Christian soldiers. She told me a short time before she was brutally murdered, "The Christers won't be happy until they control the bomb. And when they do, grab your ass honey, 'cause we're all going down in flames."

Toward the end of her life O'Hair was seeing a lot of Mr. Jack Daniels. Maybe alcohol eased the pain of age, but it didn't deaden her wit or her way with words. The old lady everybody 'loved to hate' could laugh as much as the next guy, but she could also scream - "No Justus". We're left with nothing to laugh at. We have failed to heed her advice; failed to keep religious maniacs out of government, because now as the Christians' four fingers walk across the Bible's yellowed pages, they also have a thumb on the button.

How could we have been so naīve to think that those who take directives from a book written by detesters of free thinking, and filled with unimaginable horrors for those who disagree are no different from the Taliban? "True Believers, they'll be the death of all of us," that's what a crusty longshoreman from California once said to me over a couple of pints, and he wasn't drunk.

He also said that when one book, that's been rewritten and reinterpreted hundreds of times, is placed on a pedestal of perfection by misguided people who align their beliefs with what that book reveals, they are only 'passing the buck'. When men like Catton, Caslen and Brooks take God from the Bible and put Him above everybody else, including oath of office, love of family and friends, and other brothers in arms, they're just absolving themselves from premeditative murder. That's exactly what their commander-in-chief did the day he went on record, explaining why he invaded Iraq. It's on the record: "God tells me what to do."

Where do we go from here? Some of those familiar with the brutal repression of the Age of Aquarius have already left for Canada. A few women wearing combat boots and spiked hair are organizing bake sales for progressive causes. The go-go boys down at the Forum tie yellow strings around their pinkies for luck. But Americans will need more than luck to salvage what's left of our country and we'll have to get up off our complacency to do it. One of our first acts should be to take Jesus at His Word and turn the other cheek. Next, take God out of the marketplace of politics and put Him back in church where he was born. Really, this isn't all that hard - now is it?
