 Sick Games from Senator Leahy

My letter to Leahy, dated June 23, 2007

Senator Leahy,

What kind of sick game are you playing with the American people?

How long are you going to wait until you do something about Karl Rove, George Bush, Dick Cheney, and all the other key players who have violated the law, raped the Constitution, and told the American people to f*#k off?  You could stop their abuse of power by holding any one of them in contempt of Congress.  It would be the unmistakable message that the game is over.

Are you afraid that the truth about how Section 502 got into the Reauthorized Patriot Act will be made known if you issue and enforce subpoenas to the key players?  Well it is going to be made known, so now would be a good time for you to take the high road.

We know you are covering Arlen Specter's ass on this one.  We know he and his office was responsible for the secret insertion of Section 502 and that Attorneygate would not have been possible without Section 502.  What has Specter promised you in return for hiding the truth?  If you want to go down in flames with him, just keep doing nothing to hold the Justice Department accountable for its illegal conduct.

You and your colleagues on the Judiciary Committee will not get away with stonewalling the investigations into the misconduct of the Justice Department and the Executive officers any longer.  Either tell the truth or be prepared to suffer the public humiliation for the deceptive practices you are engaged in.

Wasn't Condi supposed to appear before a Congressional Committee in mid-June?  What happened to her for showing contempt for Congress?  By not holding her in contempt of Congress, you are condoning her behavior and making it clear to anyone else who is hiding the truth like her that they have nothing to fear from thumbing their nose at the rule of law.

You should step down from the chairmanship of the Judiciary Committee if you don't have the balls to do what is right for the American people.

If you have some grand plan to bring all of the lawbreakers in the Executive branch to justice, then it is time to let both them and the American people know about it.

And if you don't have an end game plan in place, and you believe you can stall long enough to have all of this blow over, think again.

(Article Continues Below)

It is going to be made known how you, Specter, and Feinstein covered up the truth about how Section 502 made it into the Patriot Act, and how all of you are covering each other's asses by not vigorously pursuing investigations of its misuse.

The party is over.  You can choose how you want to be remembered once all of this comes to light...and it will.

I intend to see that it does.

What you don't seem to understand is that the American people are willing to accept and forgive all of your past cowardly actions if you would grow a backbone now and invoke the Constitutional and legal remedies for all the abuses of power of Executive branch officials.  This was the message they sent in the 2006 election.  And their message has not changed, nor will it in 2008.

If you expect the people to vote democratic in November, 2008, there is very little time for you and your colleagues to change your stonewalling approach to the Congressional investigations of Justice Department and Executive branch officials.

You can express as much outrage and frustration with those showing contempt for Congress, our Constitution, and the American people as you want (and this might play well in the press) but the American people are not buying any more of your bullshit.

This whole mess is either going to end up in the Supreme Court or the lawbreakers will resign before suffering through impeachment hearings in the House and trials in the Senate where conviction is the most likely outcome.

But only you can hold them in contempt, and only holding them in contempt will sufficiently twist their arm and force them to leave office (which is an admission of guilt) or take the question before the Supreme Court (where they will be found guilty).

So what in the hell are you waiting for?

There is time for you to save your reputation, but not much.

Like many Americans who have voted only democratic in the past, I thought the Democratic party looked out for the little guys.  Boy was I full of shit.

What is truly sad and frightening is that as I write this letter, I am actually in fear of my government for writing it.  And this is because of George W. Bush, the Patriot Act, and your complicity in their continued ability to terrorize the American people.  Americans no longer respect their government. They fear it.

With no respect for but in fear of my government,

John Sebastian
