"The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all." --H.L. Mencken |

Seems that passions for and against the draft have been aroused once again - most notably, in response to an article in Newsweek pleading for "Universal Service." The following are two responses.
The Military Draft, a Moral Abomination by Michael Boldin
The most important argument against the draft is moral. Whatever the excuse given for its implementation, the draft is a form of slavery. Period.
Forcing someone to work for the state; forcing someone to kill or be killed; forcing someone to do anything at the point of a gun - under threat of prison or even death - IS involuntary servitude. Of all the forms of slavery that have existed throughout history, forcing someone to fight and die in war is by far the most disgusting, and is a form of murder against all who don't survive.

Slavery Revisted: The Military Draft by Robert Fantina
The draft is not now and never will be the answer, whether in Iraq, Afghanistan or anywhere else. One must recall how effective it was during the Vietnam era; in protest of the draft students marched, burned university buildings and battled the police on America's streets and college campuses. Tens of thousands of young Americans left the country, never to return. The Vietnam War ended without the dire consequences to America that several presidents had predicted, but with over 50,000 young Americans sent to early graves, and between one and two million Vietnamese suffering the same fate.

It's high time to demand that the American government explain how any of this is in American interest. War with Iran is also criminal.
Invading a country that poses no immediate threat to the nation initiating hostilities is the gravest of war crimes. It is, under the Nuremburg Charter, a "Crime Against Peace," and the perpetrators of such crimes are guilty of a capital offense and as such should be tried, convicted, and executed.
The Bush administration already stands guilty of one such crime. It must not be allowed to commit it a second time before it has even been called to account for the first.
