It's axiomatic, based on history, that no nation can maintain an empire abroad and a democracy at home. We are now about to pay for our empire, and the price is American freedom.
This is the message of a new book by Chalmers Johnson, a historian. His latest book is titled Nemesis and is the third work in what has turned out to be a trilogy on the American Empire. The first two were Blowback and The Sorrows of Empire.
No American president in my memory has shown more disdain for the Constitution and its limits on power than George W. Bush. His ridiculous claim that his "signing statements" can alter the laws passed by Congress and his latest claim to alter the rule-making of various government agencies are just two examples.

Presidential signing statements are nothing new. From the administrations of Monroe through Carter, the executive branch issued a total of 75 signing statements.
In a remarkable increase in the use of signing statements, President Bush issued at least 435 signing statements in his first term alone. And, as we see in the above article, he's now used it to ignore or challenge well-over one thousand laws! Previous presidents would now and then tack on a comment to new statutes, but Bush is the first to use signing statements regularly to invalidate essential parts of new laws. It is important, therefore, to understand the implications as well as the constitutionality of such actions. Excerpted.

Whether you live in the Midwest or not, you can find some great articles on the Midwest Populist Party website.

Get Involved Today!
We're still some time away from making the Populist Party the living, breathing, active grassroots organization that we know it will be - but - getting closer and closer every day.
Each day we have people contacting us asking how to get involved. Although we're not at the point of local organizing, there are still a number of things that you can do to help the Populist Party continue to grow. Here's some ideas:
Join the Populist Party
Strength in numbers is the key. This is primarily a symbolic membership, as there are no fees required to join. But, as membership numbers grow, people start to pay more attention to our drive for liberty. Joining is your way of saying "Yes, we need to make a change in how America is governed!" So make a statement in support of liberty, and join the Populist Party!
Contribute
We're not going to be shy about asking for money. Any amount you can donate will help keep the Populist Party growing and all our affiliated websites active. (plus, it'll help us get new projects off the ground)
