It is time for you to lead or follow. Or if you are in agreement with my Republican representative who recently wrote to me saying, "I have seen no justification for impeachment during the last six years President Bush and Vice President Cheney have been in office", then for the sake of our country, GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY before the Bush/Cheney traitors completely destroy our country.
If you continue to stand by your ill-advised, poorly-considered, and obstinate stance not to impeach George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney, then you are no better that they are. Your inaction will establish a fatal precedent that all future Presidents of the United States will be tempted to exploit. You will be remembered as the person who helped them get away with murder, treason, and the destruction of our Constitutional protections. Your failure to stop them will be recorded and remembered for all of history. Your name will become associated with: Aaron Burr, Zebulon Pike, Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, Alger Hiss, and Aldrich Ames. This will be your legacy.
You will be looked back upon as a traitor to our country; and your refusal to fulfill your responsibilities to the American People as the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States of America will be remembered as the greatest single mistake made by any member of the U.S. Congress in our nation's history. Your failure to impeach Bush/Cheney will allow them to pardon all of their co-conspirators who are now being investigated if they are found guilty of the crimes they have committed. All of the time now being spent on oversight investigations will have been a complete waste of time.
It was foolish of you to "take impeachment off the table", and this quote will follow you for the rest of your life. Not only have you mocked our Constitution with your decision to make this statement, you have also violated your oath of office by standing by it; and if pressed, you could be impeached for your refusal to reverse your decision. But that would be the real waste of time.
If it is only your stubborn pride that is keeping you from reversing your position, then you should be ashamed of yourself. And be assured that your name will be forever associated with George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney. You will be remembered as the Congresswoman who could have stopped them, but chose to allow them to continue and get away with their treasonous acts against our republic. Your allegiance to a cause other than the preservation of our Constitution will be investigated and laid bare for all to know.
Notwithstanding Congress' cowardly and equivocal decision to "authorize" but not "declare" war on the country of Iraq, it was unconstitutional for Bush to accept this authorization. A truly honorable President would have recognized that Congress' decision was not a constitutionally-sufficient declaration of war, and would have insisted on a more specific mandate from Congress. But Bush welcomed and took advantage of Congress' ambiguous decision, and now our country is waging war in violation not only of our Constitution, but also of International Law.
When Congress neglectfully opened this door for Bush, he marched through and became emboldened. The total lack of Republican Congressional oversight reassured him that his actions would not be questioned for any of his subsequent criminal actions. Our country's condition is now beyond the point when political posturing and symbolic surgical legislative strategies will suffice. Nothing short of amputation is now called for.
George W. Bush has been directly responsible for numerous illegal and criminal acts, and if you cannot or refuse to identify any of them as high crimes or treason, then you are either ignorant of the law or a person with dishonorable ulterior motives. In either case, you are shaming yourself by maintaining your servile attitude, and you are supporting his destructive administration of the business of our country. You have become and will be remembered as an accomplice to his crimes.
You are shamefully ignoring your responsibilities to the American people and to the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives. You are in dereliction of your sworn duty to preserve, protect, and defend our country from ALL ENEMIES, whether foreign or domestic.
If you possessed the integrity and wisdom to identify, and found the courage (even at this late date) to admit that it was a mistake to ignore your responsibility to preserve and protect our U.S. Constitution, the American people would support you; and you would then be deserving of the title "Honorable Representative". The only way to honorably preserve your name in history is to reverse your unfortunate decision, and initiate impeachment proceedings immediately.
But unless you admit that mistake, or at the very least, withdraw your passive and enabling support for Bush/Cheney's ongoing criminal conduct, and immediately initiate impeachment proceedings, you will now and forever be justly held in contempt by the American people.
The evidence of Bush/Cheney's pattern of deception and criminal conduct that has resulted in two illegal wars, the suspension of Constitutional rights, and the violations of international law is incontrovertible.
(Article Continues Below)
Bush and Cheney manipulated intelligence to justify wars against nations that posed no imminent threat to our country, and these wars have resulted in the murder of hundreds of thousands of people.
They have illegally spied on U.S. citizens through warrantless wiretaps. They have repeatedly ignored and trampled on the liberties granted to American citizens by the U.S. Constitution, particularly the elimination of the right granted by habeas corpus. They have ignored international law and treaties pertaining to the detention and torture of prisoners of war. They have shown and continue to show utter contempt for Congress' constitutional oversight authority, and they have ignored the system of checks and balances that were intentionally created to specifically limit the power of the executive branch of our government.
The actions of Bush and Cheney are a deliberate and undeniable threat to the liberty and safety of the American people and to the future of the United States of America.
Your continued refusal to condemn and prosecute the high crimes and acts of treason that have been committed by the Bush/Cheney administration makes you an accomplice to their crimes, and deserving of a place beside them in history.
With regard to the Constitution, our country's Founders were specific and unequivocal about how unsuitable elected officials were to be removed from office.
In Article II, Section 4 of our Constitution they wrote, "The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors." The word "shall" was chosen to indicate without exception that when impeachment was warranted, it was not an option "not to impeach". And what would be a "high crime" if causing the deaths of thousands of American, Iraqi, and Afghani citizens in the prosecution of illegal wars is not?
Before assuming your official duties, you took the following oath: "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same.;"
To whom or what have you granted your allegiance? Through your actions, you are proving it is neither the American people nor the U.S. Constitution.
The Constitution states in Article VI, clause 3 that, "The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution;."
The words ".shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution;." mean that once you took your oath of office, you were obliged to, "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic".
Checks and balances are useless if they are not used, and impeachment is the only effective check prescribed by our Constitution that will bring an immediate end to the abuses of power that have been committed by George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney.
Justice for all; and this includes you, Ms. Pelosi.
