Domestic Spying and the Banning of Dissent?

October 12, 2007

In 1933, the Nazi SS established Dachua as the first concentration camp to house thousands of German political prisoners, whose ideas and belief systems were considered a threat to the then authoritarian regime. At first, mainly Jewish authors and artists whose words and works were considered subversive were subjected to arrest, economic restrictions, and various forms of harsh discrimination.

The earliest targets for Nazi persecution in Germany were political opponents--primarily Communists, Socialists, Social Democrats, and trade union leaders identified by a large secretive domestic spying program which monitored the activities of the populace for the Nazi SS.  The program was later expanded to include people with disabilities, those with homosexual leanings, and anyone else that opposed totalitarian rule.

In September 2002, $64 million dollars in research contracts were awarded to a secretive technology research-and-development office located near the headquarters of the NSA.  The office was tasked with developing a program called Novel Intelligence from Massive Data. "NIMD funds research to ... help analysts deal with information-overload, detect early indicators of strategic surprise, and avoid analytic errors," reads a "Call for 2005 Challenge Workshop Proposals" released by the Advanced Research and Development Activity (ARDA). The program is used to sort through the massive collections of data mining databases already developed and convert them into usable intelligence for federal agencies.

Governments have always used combating enemies - like communism or terrorism - while using fear to justify the loss of liberty.  The Nazi's also targeted citizens in the guise of protecting the common good from "terrorists and terroristic elements."  The domestic spying program of today is a rehash of the Nixon era attempt to assert executive privilege over the lives of ordinary citizens while using fear to convince the public that such a program is for our own security.

As in the late 1930's, the government is clandestinely developing databases on those groups and individuals who know about and dissent against corrupt governmental policies and the emergence of a fascist police control state.  While Americans believe government is utilizing the warrant-less spying program to target "Al-Qaeda", citizens' advocacy and government watchdog groups have challenged the government's authority to spy on its citizens in court by citing countless FOIA requests which verify under judicial review, that the government has and still does utilize millions of dollars of taxpayers own money to pursue countless intelligence hours to task the infiltration surveillance and monitoring of political ecological antiwar peace loving groups and citizens unions.

Just who does the government think the enemy is?

On November 14, 2001, Angel Shamaya released an article entitled "Public Servants" Going After "Constitutional Terrorists"? which specifies, according to a Phoenix Federal Bureau of Investigation flyer released at the Arizona "Freedom in the 21st Century" gathering, just who the government considers domestic terrorists.  Called the Joint Terrorism Task Force, the flyer details an effort by the FBI to "work jointly with local law enforcement."

The flyer specifically identifies and targets subversive elements the government considers 'domestic terrorists and domestic terrorism.' The brochure begins "If you encounter any of the following, call the Joint Terrorism Task Force," and then proceeds in setting forth guidelines which law enforcement officers should look for when identifying 'domestic terrorists or terrorism' including such things as:

"Right winged extremists" or "Super Patriots or defenders of the US Constitution against the federal government and the United Nations." Groups of individuals involved in para-military training. "Hate groups" such as black separatists' and even those with a "Christian Identity." "Common Law Proponents" who make "numerous references to the U.S. Constitution", "anyone who asks the law enforcement officer to cite his authority for making a stop", anyone who says driving is a "right," and not a "privilege", and or someone who attempts to "police the police."

(Article Continues Below)

These are not the only groups identified in the flyer but certainly the most shocking since American citizens who know their Constitutional rights are clearly labeled domestic terrorists by the flyer.  Put into context with the Patriot Act, a domestic terrorist is essentially an enemy combatant and enemy combatants have no right to even know why they've been detained and can according to the Military Commissions Act, can be indefinetly held, tortured, and even convicted using that coerced testimony.

Just what is the government doing with the databases it is developing on its own citizens?  If you don't know already, it's all about developing and implementing a complete tracking and tracing system for monitor of not just terrorists but all people entrenched within the system.  The global elite want a complete system of tracking for not only the global population but every commodity sold on the global market.

On October 4th, 2007, Mark Nestman released an article called, "Soon You'll Have To Ask Permission Before You Fly."  In that article, Nestman discusses the implementation of  two Transportation Safety Association passenger approval programs for travel  abroad and within the United States.  Both systems come online Feb. 19, 2008 after the election.  Soon passengers will need the approval of the federal government to leave the country and/or to travel within.

"What this amounts to is essentially a reprise of the infamous 'internal passport' system in effect in the former Soviet Union. In 1933, Soviet dictator Josef Stalin introduced 'internal passports' that prohibited Soviet citizens from leaving their place of residence without permission. Over time, the internal passport became the prime instrument of Soviet oppression over its citizens. It's bad enough needing to ask Uncle Sam for permission to leave the United States, and to reenter it. But an internal passport is a blueprint for totalitarianism."

Under the TSA's APIS - Advance Passenger Information System, one will need permission from the U.S. government to travel on any commercial airliner, ship, or vehicle that enters, goes through, or exits the United States even if it is just for a lay over enroute to another foreign destination.  One will not receive permission to board and travel until cleared by TSA. Whether a U.S. citizen or not, everyone must obtain permission to enter - or leave - the United States."

Another program called "Secure Flight" will require all commercial airlines to submit passenger validation through both the Secure Flight and APIS programs before approval for travel.   The Department of Homeland Security who heads up validation of both programs will be the determining factor when it comes to approval for travel whether domestically or abroad.  If you are denied permission to travel as two leading U.S. peace activists were Wednesday, October 3rd, you have no  recourse but to beg to be allowed to travel.

Retired Army Colonel and Diplomat Ann Wright was traveling with Medea Benjamin, co-founder of women's peace group CODEPINK, were headed to Toronto to appear at an antiwar event when they were denied entry into Canada because of their names appearing on an FBI Terrorist watch list.  "In my case, the border guard pulled up a file showing that I had been arrested at the US Mission to the UN where, on International Women's Day, a group of us had tried to deliver a peace petition signed by 152,000 women around the world," says Benjamin. "For this, the Canadians labeled me a criminal and refused to allow me in the country."

"The FBI's placing of peace activists on an international criminal database is blatant political intimidation of US citizens opposed to Bush administration policies," says Colonel Wright, who was also Deputy US Ambassador in four countries. "The Canadian government should certainly not accept this FBI database as the criteria for entering the country." Both Wright and Benjamin plan to request their files from the FBI through the Freedom of Information Act and demand that arrests for peaceful, non-violent actions be expunged from international records. "It's outrageous that Canada is turning away peacemakers protesting a war that does not have the support of either US or Canadian citizens," says Benjamin.

Do you think we are far off from American dissidents being 'extraordinarily renditioned' and disappeared?  Still think the program is about targeting 'terrorists'?  Do you now realize what's going on and if you do realize, do you now know that you too are in danger of being pinpointed by the domestic spying program?

Where does it go from here?  Who knows but I expect things will get a lot worse before they get better.

God help us all.
