Japan’s Catastrophe Cause Another Problems

In the beginning of March 2011, Japan was hit by an earthquake that generated a powerful tsunami. Ravaging the coast, it has produced a considerable amount of toxic waste and debris that have been carried down in part to the Pacific Ocean.

Japan’s catastrophe : Chaos of Tsunami

Approximately, 300 km along the coastline were swept away by the tsunami that penetrated 10 km inland to the north-east Japan: villages, ports, rice fields, industrial areas, greenhouses … nothing has been spared, and over 560 square kilometers of land were submerged.

Numerous videos and photos of the disaster reflected the chaos of the tsunami that destroyed the infrastructure, homes, factories, equipment, warehouses, vehicles … producing a considerable amount of various wastes and toxic.

According to the Robin Hood Association, the disaster left about 25 million tonnes of waste on land. But when the wave retreated from the coast, it carried along with a millions of tons of waste that are now in the Pacific Ocean. In addition, coastal rivers continue to carry with them the waste that end up in the ocean.

The heavier debris will have cast a danger to fishing crews when they resume their fishing activities. Floating waste are carried along by the current to North Pacific, which the forms of a loop with a full rotation will be done in ten years.

The risk of collisions between large waste of shipping containers and tree trunks in the surface with ships and submarines are not negligible. After the Morakot typhoon sweeping Chinese province and Taiwan in 2009, 170,000 tons of wood were recovered in the waters of southern Japan, but the majority of drifted wood were trained by the current trans-Pacific.

Japan’s Catastrophe : The journey of waste

According to the Robin Hood Association, the waste of the tsunami travels at an average speed of 9 to 18 km per day. It will be drift in 2 years across the Pacific Ocean before being taken over by the California Current. 2 years again being drifted will be carried along to the North and the South of California coastline. The waste will be collected and partially trapped by a circular current and contribute in the Eastern Pacific Garbage Patches. The lighter waste and the empty plastic bottles will carried along by the currents. Some waste will continue to travel and feed another waste accumulation area at the plate waste in the Western Pasific Garbage Patches. This waste will be deadly for many marine species more than a decades. They lure the birds, fish, marine mammals and turtles and will cost in their diets, causing obstruction, choking, loss of appetite and impaired mobility.

“The 25 million tonnes of waste is produced by the terrestrial double disaster of March 11, 2011 are the responsibility of the Japanese authorities. Waste water, they become an international problem. It is time to implement the agreements and logistics of mutual assistance to collect post-disaster waste streams that reach the sea, before their dispersion and multiplication by fragmentation, “insists the association Robin des Bois.
