Damn, I Was A Useful Idiot

September 4, 2006
by Leslie Brundige

In a previous article ("Why We Need Immigrants") I lauded the energy, passion, organizational skills and outspoken demands of the invisible workforce.  I marvelled at the sight of city streets across the nation teeming with their spontaneous energy.

Spontaneous?  Hmm.  The signs they carried did have a suspiciously polished, uniform appearance.  After all, these signs were made by immigrants whose first language wouldn't be English.  Was it really their camaraderie, their sense of community that got this thing so perfectly choreographed?  In some cases the media were there before the protestors, waiting for the show to begin.

Recently I learned what should have been obvious.  A friend who employs immigrant workers from Central America told me that he had warned his workers to stay home that day.  Don't go to work, and most definitely don't march in the streets.  He knew it was a ruse, intended to smoke them out.  Many of the marchers were traced back to the neighborhoods from which they came, rounded up and sent back to their countries.  Current laws allow no "wiggle room", an immigrant who is unable to "show his papers" is immediately deported.

I begged to differ; the Parasite Elite would logically welcome low-wage immigrants, to help keep salaries low.  Competition and Capitalism is for you and me, but certainly not for them.  His response was startling in it's clarity:  "They can't get anything out of them.  These guys live eight to a trailer, they send 95% of their income to their wives and families in Guatemala."

In other words, the PE are not able to suck income taxes, etc. from these undocumented people, as they do from the rest of us.  The staged national events were a useful distraction from more important international and national issues.  It kept us, the Parasite Elite's prey, arguing among ourselves about yet another non-issue that was raised without any attempt at resolution.  The bonus for INS, ICE, DHS -- whomever is now policing these matters -- was locating heretofore unknown pockets of rebellion.

Intense media focus on a previously peripheral issue has long been the Parasite Elite's preferred method of keeping us polarized.  Now I know to also suspect what appears to be spontaneous, grassroots movements.  (Like the teeming horde of Bush supporters who were flown in to Miami in 2000, to protest the recount.)  I forgot that tactic, so I was a Useful Idiot for the PE.  We still need immigrants, but we need to be more careful, more skeptical.  The PE are shameless, clever and ruthless.  Nothing they do is accidental, inherent in their plan is that we react to whatever media-driven issue they present.  By design, we are not allowed to be the actors, only the reactors.  Yes, we live in a Kafkaesque world.  Know thine enemy.
