Bailouts, Wars, and the Death of the Constitution

"The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; the second is war. Both bring a temporary prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunists."
--Ernest Hemingway

Sickness Unto Debt: The Evil of Bailout
by Ron Paul

Our government has lived beyond its means for decades. We now face a crucial juncture, at which we determine whether to continue down the path of debt, inflation, and government intervention or choose to return to the economics of the free market, which have been ignored for almost a century. Increased debt leads to higher taxes on future generations, while increased inflation diminishes the purchasing power of American families and destroys the dollar.

No society has ever been achieved prosperity through indebtedness or inflation, and the United States is no exception. We cannot afford to continue our current policies of monetary expansion and unending bailouts. Unless we return to sound monetary policy, sharply reduce government expenditures, and realize that the government cannot act as a lender of last resort, we will drive our economy to ruin.

World Peace is More Than Just a Silencing of the Guns
by Peter Chamberlin

This requires a change of attitude on the part of the aggressor, first, admitting that the US and its allies are the aggressors.  The entire terror war has been a manufactured event designed to maintain the US position of global authority.

We have to refute the acceptable lie that we have been a victim and that our great war plan simply failed, while we openly admit that the war has been a criminal act of aggression in every conceivable way, from the very beginning.

Bailout sells out future generations: What to do.
by Clyde Cleveland

There is only one way we are going to come out of this mess with more freedom, prosperity and peace in our world.  We must have a highly educated public that understands what is happening economically.  I believe that the most important thing we can do at this time is educate everyone we know.  Everything I am going to give you now is available free on the internet so it can be read or viewed any time for free.

I stayed up again late tonight to increase my own understanding of what is happening. I finished half of "Beware the Alchemists" by Ludwig Von Mises and it is incredible. This is a compilation of speeches Mises gave in the 1960s.  Let me give you a couple of quotes from Mises to whet your appetite...

The Monster in the Castle
by Steve Osborn

I watch what is going on today and it makes me think of the old Frankenstein movie. In the culminating scene, the villagers, frightened and impoverished by the depredations of the monster, storm the castle armed with pitchforks, scythes, and torches. Their aim is to drag the monster out, tear him to pieces, burn the pieces and scatter the ashes.

I fear that is the only way the United States might return to its Constitutional roots. The monster is in charge of the Constitution and the wealth of the nation. If the Constitution is not already destroyed, it is definitely buried in the dungeon of the castle.

Who Killed the Constitution?
by David Gordon, Mises.org

[Who Killed the Constitution? The Fate of American Liberty from World War I to George W. Bush. By Thomas E. Woods Jr. and Kevin R.C. Gutzman. Crown Forum, 2008. Viii + 259 pages.]

The question posed by the title of this book raises a further question, as the authors are well aware. If the Constitution is indeed dead, why does this matter? American conservatives have in past days been accused of "Constitution worship": why should we care whether actions of the government conform to this particular legal document?

Woods and Gutzman respond that the Constitution provides a way to limit the government. It is far from the best conceivable arrangement; but while we stand under its legal authority, we should use it as a weapon against the state's continual grasp for power.

The authors have selected twelve cases to illustrate this disregard of the Constitution. By no means are all of these examples of judicial misconduct; the legislative and executive branches have been at least as guilty as the judicial in seeking to enhance government power.
