An open letter to those in power

June 17, 2006
by Robert T. Melaccio Sr.

This letter is not written for vindictiveness, nor to impose my opinions on others but simply to share that opinion with those who hold the reigns of power, not only of this nation but of the entire world.  In emphasizing my point for your consideration and thought, I go back in history to the time when Rome was expanding. In the early days of her expansion she sent her sons to fight wars in far away places and in doing such she ultimately became the preeminent power of her day.  Regretfully in the short span of our existence, as compared to other civilizations, we are very much in the period as Rome was. Rome, or the Pax Romana, kept the peace, but did it really?

Rome forced her values and systems on the rest of the world and she became the wealthiest power for hundreds of years.  That is until she decayed from within and was sacked and burned a number of times. However, as they did this there came a dependency of slaves to provide what was needed at home since many of her people were off fighting the wars of expansion. [Could this be compared to the Mexicans in some cases?] The wealthier became richer and eventually owned so much  of the land and industry of that time that there was nothing for the soldier when they returned from war. How much of the wealth of this nation is owned by what number? I venture to say while wealth is growing the owners are dwindling. These soldiers had no work and no land and certainly not benefits. Have we heard any horror stories of what our troops go through upon return? I just read a story where the government was charging our vets for meals in a hospital until a senators wife stepped in. They had to pass a law to change that! Back in that day these soldiers became the homeless of the day. In fact one senator who wanted to give land to the poor was killed by his colleagues and his body was dumped into the Tigris River. We all know what eventually happened to Rome. Like every other civilization that gained their success on the hard labor and values of their citizens they became decadent and decayed from greed and lust from within.

Now many of you will scoff at this because you do not see the comparison. You will say that the situation is not the same. You will say we are helping people to become free, democratic enterprise nations and giving them the American dream. You will say we are building roads and schools and industry and improving their life and all of this is true. However, you do not address if this is the life they want. You do not address that while the lives of the average person are improving you see no real benefit but the powerful and rich class is growing leaps and bounds. That these powerful within these nations have ties to major U.S. corporations who own many of these foreign companies. That many of these new power brokers are corrupt. We just look the other way while we continue our own agenda. Your only answer is that will take time while the people fester and become hardened against us. They want their leaders to be those who share their vision and ideals for their society.

Well you leaders have all the time in the world because non of the hardships impact you. You vote your own raises and benefits and  you are part of the elite that own everything. Many of you come to power as average citizens and leave wealthy. One wonders how that can be accomplished? You go for a term and stay thirty years and your argument is that you must be doing some good. Yes, you are it's called "pork"! You know and understand what is transpiring but do really not care while you are on this noble quest?  You point to things have never been better [for you and the news cronies who feed the system] but are they.? There are many like you who do not want to know and stifle us  who speak out with berating and false accusations. You ruin many a person for the sake of your goals while forgetting everyone has something in the closet and perhaps even you?

Today many average people find it difficult owning their own home and for those who do own one,  in maintaining them, and things are getting worse. While salaries are higher the cost of everything is higher. Taxes, insurances, clothes, fuel, food and other costs are all rising. Many are without basic medical care. The ranks of the troubled are growing. What about our industry? Do we really have any?  Lets look to our military as just one example. We have to go elsewhere for the technology to keep things glued together. We even had to shop for bullets because we did not have the capacity here at home. Our troops are sent to die without the most modern equipment or protection, while you say it is in the pipeline and "we are making strides".  Tell that to our dead sons and children. Why don't you send your own to the front? Perhaps your thoughts would be of true protection and not bottom line measures that kill people and require excuses.  We in America depend on others to support us who do not share the same zeal, determination or dream. We call them our allies.  These allies do the bare minimum and for a price.

Our nation has seen a change in values and beliefs due to the illegal and escalated desire to inject more third world country populace into our mainstream. The effort being to literally change the culture of our nation. It is so predominant that the values, and beliefs the nation was founded on are under attack and our culture has  been so undermined that we even want to forsake Christmas to appease those who do not have Christian values.

You say no, then why is it that Mosques can ring out their call but church bells remain silent in some cities? That you cannot say "merry Christmas" or have any representation. Of the holiday!  Look back to England a few hundred years ago and you will find out what happened to that government that wanted to ban Christmas. That is a fact of history you ignore. Why is it that our sons and daughters are dying everywhere and we are hated for it, and the very people we provide preference to education, housing, opportunities to, do not assist in the capture of these terrorists but support the killing  and terror by their silence.

(Article Continues Below)

You say no, but what is the percentage of these new Americans or for that matter the people we benefit in Iraq or Afghanistan turning in the radicals who plot and scheme and desire our overthrow. Sure there are some and it is getting better, but of an entire population why is there not more if we are doing that good? Should not everyone of good will want to rid themselves of this pestilence? I ask why are illegal persons allowed to stream across our borders unhindered, for years and years,  and are then given preferred treatment. Is it for our Christian values, or is it because it is good for those powerful organizations that need cheap labor? Why is it that years ago we could tech "languages of choice" in school and today we get Spanish and everyone has to learn it?   Why is it that everywhere you foster Spanish and you offer preferred treatment to that minority segment for jobs and opportunities, even over Afro Americans and other minorities. Don't tell me no, everyone knows the truth, if they care to admit it. We still even continue to forsake our own native Americans.

You will call this bigotry, in my opinion it is truth. In your heart of hearts you know it is truth and so does the God above you profess and who will judge you. I can only state my opinion as I experience and know it based on your actions. It has gotten so bad in ignoring the truth that some religious have even expressed to me the question that could it be that black may not be really black, and what is really truth. How deep do we need to get? This is the simple truth of most if not all Americans. Like our people who came here no one begrudges anyone an opportunity and no one wishes them harm but only peace and success. They should compete the same as everyone else who came here on a boat, who worked up the ladder and forced their children to learn the language, from the bottom up.  That is the American dream! Help them by providing opportunity, assistance through the rough part and jobs they can grow with no handouts, which breed arrogance and demands because they truly believe they are entitled to these benefits by nature of birth and some type of discrimination that only they experienced. Tell that to my forefathers!

The dream you espouse is the dream of the league of Nations. It has always been around and it fails because of one thing "MAN". This dream of the intellectual and powerful is that you can take the American system and give it to the world and they will jump at the chance. That all will be well in Shangri La and the people of the world will be as one. You say you are educated and religious but you do not even understand the very Word of God you profess to follow.  He spells it all out for you. Oh, you say we should try, and I agree. But it is in the how that our opinions differ. Take Henry Fords model and put it to work and you will succeed, but not in the version you have today  which is little more than exploitation. You say times are different. Well not in these  third world nations. They are still living in the middle ages. Regretfully, my opinion is you are woefully wrong and our children and we are paying the price while the elite and powerful reap the whirlwind of riches and power.

Yes, much like the Rome of old we are the new Rome of today. For all their engineering marvels and life style that influenced the world of their day, that world still sunk back into the dark ages. Why - MAN! You now have the Persians, who are close or already have a bomb and despise us. You will talk and offer until you are blue in the face. I suggest you send Neville Chamberlain for the Pax Romana of today. You have the Koreans, who are close or already have a bomb. They also despise us and are led by a despot. In South America they hate our expansion and it is becoming more alarming each and every day.

We can give them the farm and everything else and they would still want to kill us and hate us! So what do we do? Do we continue this same false hope that somewhere in the future all will be bright.. We peons will still be getting low wages, working long hours and no benefits and when we get sick we will be discarded. Like old cattle when they reach the point of no return. For the good of the company and the bottom line. It has been that way forever. Think not, well I hope your opinion turns out much better then mine. History has proven my opinion correct many times.

As for my own ideas, we are well beyond the point where we can protract and withdraw. However, if we all share this one world dream then the word "equitable" has to come into the picture somewhere. Our allies have to start to become true allies and take a full share in the burden. Our trading "partners" have to become more open and equitable. However, keep in mind that China is a giant, who is becoming bigger and bigger by the day, who also looks to devour us and the world. Why are we not concerned as we should. You bet those in power are because they will be the first to go if we fall. We should all keep in mind that as China changes they will become more like us. That is 100% exactly what will happen, but not in our system of government or way of life. Then what will they do? You got it, they will want to export their way of life and system. Does this sound strikingly familiar? The only question is HOW?

So in my opinion, we should slowly extract from being this big brother to the world. That is not to pull out all together but maintain our share of the goal. We should immediately start to build up our industry and diversify at home. We should build up our defenses and expand our military and our infrastructure always keeping in mind our adversaries. This is not the mode of an aggressor but prudent in this age. However, all our citizens mush share in the service to our nation to protect our ideals and way of life. Yet, when we say "all", we mean no exclusions!

We should concentrate on improving the lives of our people not lowering their standard, as is the goal. We have enough opportunity right here in the good old USA to keep us going for centuries while we "slowly" change the world! We should open a direct dialogue with our enemies as to how we can ease the wrongs perceived and those that are legitimate and work with them, short of selling our souls, and from a position of strength  and power to better all of our people. Yet, they must understand their way has created injustice and wrongs as well. They must get to understand and trust over time though working together hat we do not wish to impose our values system on them but that we need each other to truly have that which we all seek. The rich will have enough opportunity to get richer and we will be showing the true American spirit.  Much like Pontiac, who became a loyal subject of the king, we all can solicit their loyalty to their people and culture in union with us as a true co worker in their endeavors.

Finally, we must understand that as long as man walks this earth there will be those who wish to impose their will and ideal on others. They are the true enemies of all men. Let those who are impacted the most handle these within their immediate domicile. That is not to say we should not understand the World Trade horror was brought about by men who's ideals are to spread an ideology  and impose their will on others. Hitler said it and did it while the world tried to appease him. There is no appeasement with evil. However, all must share the ideal to rid themselves of this scourge. If not then we only have an obligation to protect ourselves and not shed one more ounce of blood on their behalf! We can only stop that type of  universal threat with our true and committed allies. Regretfully, today there are few allies and those we call allies are in the same position as us.

Now this is just one mans opinion. Yet I offer it not in hostility but in the hopes that some of these thoughts, good or bad, may stir some thought processes in those who have the power to make change.

For my belief is that these people are truly good people who have lost the right perspective.
